Legacy of the Portal War
From bad to worse
I decided to abandon the city and move further south. I came to this deciscion after I noticed that we could not stop the advance of the disease. Yet another enemy I cannot defeat. The disease is magical in nature, and according to Job is being spread on purpose as a weapon. he believed he had found evidence of this. Tracking the culprits however seemed too difficult as we were threatened by both the disease and the army of anubians. Although it pained me we left the city behind in search of more luck down south. At least we convinced some civilians to travel south as well.
We arrived in a village untouched by the plague a few days later. Initially we were greeted cautiously, but the people proved friendly enough. We explained what was happening and adviced them to abandon their village and run south. The army of anubians would not allow them to stay. They put it to a vote and decided to stay. I saw this coming. Although they value our help and advice they wanted to stay in the home they always knew. I could not do more fort hem, so again we left.
A few days later we were pleased to approach a larger city but our joy quickly turned to horror as we realised the city was abandoned or worse. Everything in the city gave of fan aura of death. It was clear the plague had come here and had killed all. We searched for survivors and heared soft noises coming from the city square. There, at the foot of and old cathedral stood creatures I remeber all too well, zombies. It had been over 30 years since I had seen any undead. The creatures were trying to gain acces to the cathedral which meant there were still some people alive in there. Undead hate the living and even these mindless creatures will do whatever it takes to kill and eat them. We tried to circle around the cathedral to find another entrance. Zombies are mindless undead and will go for the most obvious entrance in to the building, they do not search for backdoors. We attracted the attention of some of the zombies and were forced to fight them. They proved a challenge altough my shield and armor proved true and protected me. When we reached the back door and made our way inside of the cathedral we came upon a small group of survivors. We decided to help them and lead them to safety outside. When we came outside however we saw several elves exiting a portal. Seeing as how they were obviously magic users and elves to boot, Jon immedialty attacked. Many of us went down before the elves decided to turn and flee, yet none of us died. We retreated back in to the cathedral to heal our wounds and think.
The events of late have me very worried. I returned from my exile to stop the assassins that had attacked my wife, but what I found was a world in need of saving. Lydia told me that I would yet again need to save it, that what was coming was worse than the portal war. I am afraid I cannot do this however. I cannot stop an invasion of magical creatures or the spread of a magical plague without magic. Warning anybody or setting up a resistance is impossible because of the vast distances in the kingdom. Gathering information is hampered by this as well because the information is spread across thousands of miles. Lydia advices me to ignore the anubians for now and focus on other threats. I will ignore the anubians, it is not like I can halt their advance. But how can I focus on the other threats? I need to think about this.
I realise we are failing, that all we are doing is running away, going further south in the hope of finding a place untouched that we can warn and help prepare. I fear no such place exists. I can not and do not blame my companions. Their skill is impressive. The combat abilities of most far exceed my own and Wolfgang is far more intelligent and charismatic than me. They are doing their job, I am failing mine. We lack magical power and knowledge. I long for the days when Valterra and Lanfear provided me with their wise counsel. I will not give up however. There is always hope. I have decided to travel to elvish lands in the hope of finding out more about the mysterious elves we met outside of the cathedral.
